Understanding Air Compressor Sizing
Selecting the right air compressor is vital for energy efficiency in chemical plants and manufacturing facilities. This calculator helps estimates the required Motor Power (kW/HP) and Receiver Tank Volume based on your Free Air Delivery (FAD) requirements and operating pressure.
How Calculations Work
The power requirement is calculated using the Adiabatic Compression Formula, adjusted for mechanical and isentropic efficiencies specific to the compressor type (Screw vs. Reciprocating). The Receiver Size is estimated to minimize compressor cycling, typically aiming for a storage volume that holds 10-20 liters per liter/second of flow.
Efficiency Considerations
Air compressors are energy-intensive utilities. Roughly 80-90% of the electrical energy used by a compressor is converted into heat. Proper sizing ensures the motor runs near its peak efficiency point rather than idling or overloading.
Process Simulation & Utilities
For large-scale utility design involving instrument air headers and control valve networks, simple sizing is not enough. You should simulate the entire utility loop. Check out our Aspen HYSYS Training Courses to master utility system modeling.
